Winter Festivals

November 2018

This term we have been learning about winter festivals around the world. We started off with learning about Halloween.

We had great fun scooping out the insides of a pumpkin.
We then used the insides to make pumpkin soup. We all decided that it was delicious.
We also painted some pumpkin pictures. We used yellow and red paint to make the orange by ourselves
 
Some of us worked hard to paint using different tones of orange by adding more yellow or red.

 

Here we are matching dots on spider peg legs with numerals on the spiders body.

 

We had to use our number skills as well as our fine motor skills to complete this.

 

We have ordered Halloween numbers 1 to 10 correctly.
Next we looked at bonfire night. Here we are doing a science experiment to make fireworks in a glass.
We had to mix food dye with oil and then put it in a glass of water. The food dye then floated down the glass and looked like fireworks.
We then made fireworks using a colander and pipe cleaners.
We had to thread the pipe cleaners through the holes in the colanders. It was lots of fun.
We made firework rockets using cardboard tubes, paint, card and sugar paper. Then Miss Nash hung them in our classroom.
The next festival we looked at was Diwali. This is a Hindu festival which originates in a country called India. Here we are making Diva lamps.
We had great fun making Diwali sweets.
They were made from coconut, condensed milk and icing sugar. Mrs Wheeler really enjoyed the ones we gave to her.
We also had a go at making Rangoli patterns, here we had to colour the pattern by number. We have coloured in very neatly and carefully.
The next festival we learnt about was Chinese New Year, China is a very big country a long way from England.
We had great fun working out how to use chop sticks to pick things up.
We also made stir fried noodles. We learnt how to hold a knife correctly and chop lots of vegetables.
We cut up carrots, bean sprouts, mange tout, peppers, onions, ginger and we peeled and crushed some garlic to put in with the noodles. We all enjoyed eating this.

Now we are looking at Christmas. We are working hard on our Christingle Assembly and look forward to seeing our families on Thursday 13th December.
