Science

At St Francis, we use the Kapow scheme for Science because it provides a coherent and carefully sequenced approach that builds knowledge and skills progressively. The curriculum outlines both substantive knowledge – key scientific concepts – and disciplinary knowledge, including scientific enquiry and methods, encouraging pupils to ask questions, plan investigations, collect and interpret data and evaluate evidence. It explores sustainability, enabling pupils to apply science to global issues and is designed to support all learners through embedded scaffolding. Strong links with maths and literacy are incorporated, alongside ongoing retrieval and assessment, ensuring pupils develop a deep understanding of science and its relevance to the world around them.

We are committed to making Science engaging, relevant, and enjoyable for all our pupils. Practical, hands-on experiences are a key feature of our science lessons, allowing children to explore concepts through investigation and experimentation. This active approach to learning encourages curiosity, deepens understanding, and increases pupil participation across all year groups.
